Penning a recommendation for a butcher is something I could never have envisaged doing...as...I'm a lifelong vegetarian! Last week saw me buying a large fillet of beef for the dinner party's Beef Wellington I was having to prepare, under duress, I have to stay. The guys at Lewis of Sunningdale were aware of my 'condition' but still treated me admirably, providing the recipe and tips on how to make it perfect...even though the last thing I was going to do was taste it. And I have to say that the guests thought it truly was perfect and to a man, believed it to be the best bit of beef they'd ever tasted. Subsequently, everyone's pulling my leg about me being on the slippery slope back to being a carnivore and whilst only time will tell on that score I can assure the guys I'll be back next week for Sunday's leg of lamb...and nut roast!
"It's the knowledge of the butchers that keeps pulling me back in, they just know what they're doing and the manner of 'cut' and presentation is second to none. I'm also a great fan of the sauces and relishes which really do complement any meal...thought the baffling array of choice makes the decision even harder!"
"With Nigel's commitment to all things local, natural and properly raised I can buy with complete confidence - no battery chickens or mechanically reconstructed meat here. If you value what you put on your family's plate then do what I do, buy from Lewis of Sunningdale."
"Living as I do, some 7 mile away, I really do have to go out of my way to pop into your shop but thankfully the results always outweigh the hassle that parking in Sunningdale presents. My only request is that you install a proper coffee machine for those of us that have had to travel for the privilege of serving your fine produce."
"You deserve to be the best butcher in the whole county...though I don't want to tell any of my friends as I want the best cuts for myself."
"Lewis of Sunningdale is a byword for the best quality you can buy today. I wouldn't dream of shopping anywhere else."
"Nothing seems too much trouble for Nigel and his boys. They're fun, polite and most importantly, know exactly what it's all about as far as meat is concerned. Thank you for feeding me so well over the years!"
"Excellent local butchers - truly wonderful meat and always served with a smile and a quip."
"Their strap line of 'great food, good advice and a touch of humour' really does say it all and, rather surprisingly in today's over-blown hyperbole marketing manner, is refreshingly accurate."
Welcome back Gourmet Dishes! Where have you been and why did you go? Thank God you're back and the steak & kidney pie once again fills a void in my life!"
Lewis of Sunningdale is a fabulous butcher. They know where their meat comes from and who they've been raised by. They are concerned with the quality of the animals lives as much as they are the finished product. They are keen to prepare any cut of meat you want and being American we're used to meat being prepped in a slightly different manner, which is no trouble to the guys at all. In addition, Lewis of Sunningdale offers seasonal specialties that are creations of 'the house' and make a quick meal absolutely delicious. The range of 'ready-meals' (not a term that does them justice!) are truly wonderful and they never fail! The meat is, if I'm not mistaken all free-range and organic and surprisingly, the prices are not that much higher than local supermarket and grocery stores whilst the quality and taste are substantially higher. These people REALLY care about the product, the customer and the end result. FANTASTIC!
Our sausages do appear to reach the parts other sausages are unable to and here's a little ditty written by a fan of our 'Texas Terrors'
'Sunningdale's Superb Sausages'
I really do love sausages, they are simply great
I love a huge big pile of them, stacked way upon my plate
I love them baked, I love them grilled, but especially just fried
In fact there's not one cooking method I have not yet tried
I love all different varieties, all different shapes and sizes
I love ordinary ones, skinless ones and ones that have won prizes
I do love a Cumberland ring, but I can only eat one
I love a jumbo sausage with onions in a bun
I love the speciality ones, it's amazing what you can get
With oh so many different flavours, I've not tried them all – not yet!
So you can see I do love sausages and can eat them all the week
In fact I wouldn't blame you saying I'm a downright sausage freak!
I can honestly say that the rack of lamb was among the best I've ever tasted. And starting my Sunday without a full-English of Nigel's finest sausages, smoked back bacon and a couple of free-range eggs just isn't worth contemplating."
"Being so close to Waitrose you'd think it would count against Lewis of Sunningdale, but no, just the opposite as I can leave my car in their car park and pop down the road to get the best sausages that money can buy. Try the Texas Terrors...if you dare!
"Your service remains unsurpassed and it is a treat to shop with you. How Waitrose manage to sell a single meat product with you so close is beyond me."
"Thank you for treating me like a proper customer rather than just a source of revenue, it truly makes a difference in this day and age. Congratulations on taking over from your father, Colin and for continuing the business in his manner. Your future success is assured."
"The goose we enjoyed at Christmas was worthy of the bird that graced the final scenes of Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' and rest assured we will be back."
I'm so glad I discovered Lewis of Sunningdale the other day as they are great! They were very busy but were still able to help everyone out. They were happy to talk about their suppliers, mainly local farmers, and what characters they were. I bought a leg of lamb for a special family dinner, hubby cooked it and it was fabulous. Terrific food and compliments all round. Needless to say I'll be calling again.
"When my cooker failed me Nigel came through at the shortest of notice and saved the day. The dinner party went ahead with homemade mushroom soup, coq au van for six and the most fantastic chocolate roulade you've ever tasted - too good in fact as the cat was out of the bag and everyone knew I hadn't cooked it!
"It's been a pleasure to have shopped at Lewis of Sunningdale for many years as the guys are knowledgeable, passionate and committed to bringing the best produce to our tables. The fillet and sirloin, is to my mind, the best meat I've ever tasted and is how beef used to taste. It's also tremendous to see them using their own meat in the Homemade Gourmet Dishes and these certainly hit the mark...with the 'steak and claret' being my personal recommendation."
"Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without having to queue up at Lewis of Sunningdale but the quality of the free-range and organically raised turkey makes it all worthwhile."
"The Homemade Gourmet Dishes are a life-saver....just don't tell my husband!"
